Petion to the UK Government re the Porn Industry

In February 2025 Baroness Bertin published her Independent Review of Pornography Regulation which called for various actions to be taken regarding pornography and other adult content sites.

These recommendations included:

• Making strangulation ("choking") pornography illegal.

• Making incest pornography illegal.

• Legislating against deep fake porn and intimate image abuse

• Prohibiting porn that might encourage an interest in child sex abuse

• Tackling violence against women and girls

• Holding platforms accountable for harmful content.

The word could image above is a (sanitised) version of the main content on the homepage of one of the largest porn sites in the world. It was produced using the video titles shown on their home page on the same day Baroness Bertin’s Review was published. On this date about 20% of these titles promoted themes of incest and violence against women. These sites have no decent age verification and can be found by children. Many of the clients I see who struggle with their porn content came across it very young. The fact is that pornography sites have long exploited women and produced harmful content, profiting from it.

It is difficult to see how the Review’s recommendations do not make sense and why, except for greed, these sites do not already have them in place. Baroness Bertin sums up the concerns very succinctly:

“[Pornographic] content that is free to view and easily accessible has become increasingly violent, degrading and misogynistic. Over a quarter of the nation regularly accesses online pornography. A third of men say they watch pornography at least once a week and the average age people first see pornography is 13, very often by accident.”

“Home pages of many mainstream pornography sites display content that nobody could deny is sexually violent. Video titles regularly include words such as ‘attack’, ‘kidnap’, ‘force’, ‘violate,’ and ‘destroy’. Content around step-incest and adults role-playing as children is also highly prevalent.”

“The competition for clicks is driving the production of increasingly disturbing content. Its ubiquity is rewiring the way young people think about gender, sex and their role in society, and changing how they behave. Misogynistic attitudes are on the rise, with online spaces, including some pornography sites, playing a significant role”

20% Homepage Content about Incest Themes

I wonder what comes to mind when porn sites are mentioned. For those who visit them, they are aware of the YouTube-like presentations on the home page: video clips of the content available, number of views, clip length, likes and dislikes. Yet it is sobering to think that children of any age can get to this content, even though proportions of it depict incest themes and sexual aggression.

You may think this is extreme, but on the date the Review was published, 20% of the homepage videos of PornHub promoted this material. In the work I do with clients struggling with sex and porn, people have frequently reported stumbling across this stuff from the age of 10. Again, if you think this hyperbole, here are the (sanitised) titles of that day:

It is also interesting to note that for sites like this, one of the most popular categories they promote are Teen video (which, they often state, are "barely legal").

This is why I think that the UK Government should fully implement the Review's recommendation.

Over the years some have sought to highlight the abuses within the porn world and the dangers that can come from it. Laila Mickelwait recently published Takedown, a book exposing the amount of sex trafficking on these sites. Other organisations, such as Naked Truth have sought to provide support for those struggling as well as information for parents and teachers. Ian Henderson, the founder of Naked Truth, sums up the porn industry. “The porn industry thrives on MORE—more content, more views, more money.”

Personally, I would also suggest it thrives on more extreme content, more dopamine hits and an escalation of viewing habits. Could this be why their “Teen” category, full of “barely legal” content, often features on their Most Popular page.

Porn Use can Lead to Porn Addiction

Sadly, for some, porn use moves from being a leisure activity to a habit and then a dependency. It becomes a problem. And then it can lead to illegal activity that can destroy lives and families.
